How to get the best out of your guitar – Part 1: The new guitar purchase and set up
The brand new guitar purchase
Did you know that almost all guitars, no matter what brand or price point should be ‘set up’ by a qualified technician? This is especially true for brand new ‘straight out of the box’ guitars.
When guitar manufacturers ship their guitars to suppliers and then onto your local store for purchase, they ship them with looser truss rods (The bit that straightens the neck). This helps to protect them in transit from major temperature variations that the shipping container may be subjected to.
This ensures that on delivery of the guitar, the guitar is in the best structural shape it can be for the buyer, however, means that set up is required to ensure best playability.
Also, manufacturer set ups on new guitars are factory standard and they don’t take into consideration the different playing styles or the personal preferences of the buyer.
Here at Music Specialists Maitland we inspect each new ‘out of the box’ guitar to ensure the structural integrity of the instrument and a generalised set up is completed prior to being hung in the store for sale.
